| With summer in full swing its time to start thinking about next year....bulbs. I have been on my holidays to France and returned to notice a slight turn in the air, which signals the upcoming busy season of bulb planting. Last year we created a fabulous geometric display at the Packhorse pub using Hyacinth, Tulip, Daffodil and Fritillaria. I'm going for something different this year, but sticking with the geometric and bold colours I think. Also I need more Alliums - everywhere! They are such a great gap filler between the end of the spring bulbs and the start of the early flowering herbaceous plants in the borders - attached photo shows a garden we planted in May and illustrates how the Purple Sensation bridges the gap. I'm also thinking of vegetable garden bulbs and that means garlic. Now is the time to order, I plant out in September. Its a long growing season (we started harvesting in June), but so worth it - they require very little care and we always get huge fat bulbs to store with a wonderful flavour. In the veg garden we're also thinking about last sowings for Autumn harvesting - beetroot, turnip, chard, spinach etc plus all the oriental salad sowings that are quick to mature and prefer to grow when the days are shortening and its not so hot - August is perfect. We have 2 new faces on the team as well so we're raring to go for the Autumn rush. Teresa |
