HGandG Blog - Busy time of the year

Busy time of the year
Tue, Oct 29, 2013
It all seems to come at once in Autumn - lawn treatments, bulb planting, lifting and dividing herbaceous perennials, planting up winter pots and planning. Lots of planning. We like to stand back and look at this time of year and make notes on how to improve for next year. This includes borders, shapes and plants, and vegetable patches.

We're planning new designs on our existing kitchen gardens and have started work marking out and considering materials to construct raised beds etc. All with the aim of improving appearance, and ultimately giving us the opportunity to keep things exciting each and every year. I've linked some photos to this blog entry to show you some of our bounty and specifically some particularly beautiful lettuces!

So, bulbs are mainly in, except for tulips which we will start over the next couple of weeks, plus I have yet to source my wallflowers which could do with going in at the same time. I'm looking for a deep red flower to lift the Spring borders and compliment my Allium bulbs. We've also completed all of our winter planting and pots are all stuffed with bulbs for spring.

During late November and early December it will be time for us to start clearing and cutting back plus manuring borders and kitchen gardens on a mammoth scale - keeps us warm though!
